About Me & My Santa Philosophy

About me

I am a New York native, born in a small town adjacent to a reindeer farm. (Seriously!)

I graduated college with a degree in broadcast journalism, and an extensive background and apprenticeship in theatre and the performing arts. My theatre career and Santa “career” began over 35 years ago, and has taken me to stages in 20 different states and four countries.  In addition to my hundreds of appearances as Santa, I have performed as an actor, singer, storyteller, magician, radio personality and voice-over artist.  As a designer/scenic/special effects artist, I have worked with talented colleagues who have won Oscar, Tony, Grammy, and Ace Awards.

For over 30 years, I have worked at Columbia College in SC, where I am currently the Artistic Technical Director. “Mrs. Claus” (Lorraine) and I have been married since 1983 and our proudest achievement is our daughter Sarah, who continues the legacy of working with children in her elementary school classroom.

Among my many hundreds of Santa visits, I have particularly enjoyed the Christmas Spirit shown at the following locations:

My Santa Philosophy

I believe in Santa Claus! On my visits, I have seen true Christmas miracles.  I have talked to children who could not hear. I have visited children in hospitals for their “final Christmas” and visited them again the next year...out of the hospital and back in their school. I made a rocking chair for a small girl confined to a wheelchair so that she might have someplace else to sit, and the next year, she and her family gave me the surprise gift of walking out of that rocker to give me a hug.

I believe in the magic of a child’s wonder…of their simple faith to believe in something good. Children are not born knowing how to hate. Children are not born believing that people who are different are to be feared, or looked down on, or made to feel unwelcome.  Unfortunately, children are taught these things. But I believe that if they can be taught such things that are so dangerous and harmful and hurtful…then children can be taught the opposite.  I can teach them the gift of giving. I can give them memories of a stranger who looked different…A stranger who dressed differently…who acted differently, but gave them a simple gift; a candy cane…a smile…a hug, and the feeling and memory of being loved.
